The Environmental Division was allocated funds for earning the “DOD Environmental Award for Environmental Quality Overseas” in 2011. With the help of the Eagle Scouts and the rest of DPW, they built the Green Classroom, an outdoor habitat and virtual classroom in Vilseck situated near the Rose Barracks library.

VILSECK, Germany — The Environmental Division here is an active force within the community. Recently, environmentalists and scientists within the division constructed what they’ve dubbed the Green Classroom, an outdoor habitat and virtual classroom in Vilseck situated near the Rose Barracks library.

Basically, it’s a leisure area for the Rose Barracks Military Community and an outdoor learning center for the adjacent schools, library and Army Community Service.

The area offers different habitats for many plant and animal species. And information boards provide interesting, and sometimes astonishing facts about plants and animals living in the various habitats.

The idea to establish the Green Classroom started out with additional funds allocated to the garrison for winning the “DOD Environmental Award for Environmental Quality Overseas” in 2011.

A year later, during the fall of 2012, construction work was completed and in spring 2013, the fruit trees and the hedgerow were planted. In 2014, the willow tepee was built as part of an Eagle Scout Service Project and the pavilion was constructed by the Public Works wood shop.

The grand opening is Mon, Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m. You’re invited to attend. The Green Classroom will be open to the public 24/7 thereafter. For more, visit the Environmental Division webpage at www.bavaria.army.mil/environmental or at DSN 475-6602, CIV 09641-83-6602. Enjoy!
