GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Every year, as the trees become bare and leaves pile up along sidewalks and lawns, the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Directorate of Public Works leads a concerted effort to beautify the installation before the season gives way to the cold, snowy months of winter.

Service members, civilians and their families living on-post at Tower and Rose Barracks, Hohenfels and Garmisch can purge their homes of bulky, hazardous and autumn yard waste during the cleanup effort.

Rose Barracks and Garmisch will conduct Fall Cleanup Oct. 22-26, 2018.

Tower Barracks will conduct Fall Cleanup Nov. 5-9, 2018.

Hohenfels will conduct Fall Cleanup Nov. 19-20, 2018.

During fall cleanup, DPW crews, tenant units and organizations work together to clear access ways, public spaces and recycling stations of any remaining built-up debris from the summer. Leaves are collected, roads and sidewalks are repaired, and recycling centers organize turn-in days and offer longer hours for special waste disposal.

Community members can also help with the community-wide clean sweep and use this time to de-clutter their homes and workspaces of bulk trash and automotive and hazardous waste.

Bulk Trash, Refuse & Recycling

Fall cleanup provides on-post Tower and Rose Barracks housing and troop billeting areas with one-time curbside pickup services for large and heavy bulk trash and leaves.

Large, heavy bulk trash: Separate large, heavy bulk trash items, such as furniture, mattresses, carpets and large televisions, into two piles: metal-based (bicycles and appliances) and all other large, bulk trash. Then, place these items in your housing or troop billeting area’s designated waste pickup or storage zone — typically an island or fenced-in area of recycling containers. Items should not block entrance to the waste containers. Also, please handle refrigerators and freezers with care to prevent damage to cooling coils.

  • Bulk Trash pickup for on-post Rose Barracks is Oct. 25 and on-post Tower Barracks is Nov. 8. Pickup areas will be marked. Community members should not place items out until the areas are marked or Fall Cleanup has started. Bulk trash items must be placed prior to 6:30 a.m. on the day of pickup.

  • Off-post government quarters in Vilseck, Schlicht, Sorghof, Freihung and Hahnbach will have a curbside bulk pick up on Oct. 18. Other off-post housing should coordinate for bulk pick up with county trash removal.

Smaller bulk trash: Smaller, easily transported bulky waste items, such as microwaves, vacuum cleaners and computer parts, are not part of curbside collection. Please take these items directly to the on-post recycling centers, which will have extended hours during Fall Cleanup:

  • Central Recycling Center, Tower Barracks, Bldg. 700 (Tank Road between Gates 4 and 9) Mon – Fri 8 a.m. – noon, and 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.

  • Recycling Center, Rose Barracks, Bldg. 107 (next to Central Issuing Facility, Bldg. 102) Mon – Wed, Fri 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Thu 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • USAG Bavaria-Hohenfels SORT Facility/Recycling Center (Bldg. 25) Mon – Fri 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Leaves and yard waste: Please place leaves and other related yard waste in clear, visible bags or open containers in authorized pickup locations on the designated bulk trash collection days above. Dark trash bags or bags with indistinguishable contents will not be serviced.

Regular refuse and recyclables, including paper, plastic, metal, glass and bio waste, are not part of curbside collection. Leaving these items on the curb — otherwise known as illegal dumping — is strictly prohibited. Community members can take excess refuse and recyclables to the on-post recycling centers.

Hazardous & Automotive Waste

In general, products with harsh chemicals are considered hazardous waste. In accordance with German mandates and installation environmental standards, hazardous and automobile waste must be treated carefully during disposal.

Please take all household hazardous waste items, including old paints, household cleaning products, antifreeze, motor oil and dead batteries, to the Self-Help stores. Self-Help is located at Tower Barracks – Bldg. 394, Rose Barracks – Bldg. 103, and Hohenfels – Bldg. 742.

Hazardous material drop off for Garmisch residents is available Tues – Thurs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Auto Craft Shop in Bldg. 256.

Military units and organizations should take any unwanted, excess and expired hazardous material in unopened containers to HAZMAT turn-in points. The Hazardous Material Management Program accepts HAZMAT materials at Tower Barracks, Bldg. G332A (inside the Bulk POL Yard) and Rose Barracks, Bldg. 121 (inside the RSSA, across from the Central Issuing Facility). To coordinate, call DSN 476-2512, CIV 09662-83-2512.

Automotive waste, such as leftover engine oil, car parts and engine components, is also considered hazardous in Germany. Please take these items to the Automotive Skills Center located at Tower Barracks, Bldg. 528 or Rose Barracks, Bldg. 711.
