GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — The Grafenwoehr Main Exchange surprised 18 well-deserving customers by paying off their layaway purchases on Aug. 23.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service teamed up with Pay Away the Layaway to help military families as they head back to school, paying off more than $3,000 in eligible layaway purchases for Grafenwoehr Main Exchange customers.

The selected customers were invited to come in to the Exchange for a “prize” where they were surprised to learn that their layaways were paid in full. Garrison Command Sergeant Major Micheal Sutterfield joined Main Store manager Denise Lundie and sales and merchandise manager Fred Grant to present paid layaway merchandise to the customers.

Several winners were in the PCS process and this surprise was also a relief.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to share the story of the Exchange and how the Exchange gives back to the community with events such as this or through our MWR contributions,” said Lundie.

Pay Away the Layaway (www.payawaythelayaway.org) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that raises money online to pay off layaway balances. The mission of the organization is to inspire hope and spread kindness. The Exchange is honored to cooperate with Pay Away the Layaway to bring help and excitement to military families as they prepare for the new school year.
